President Yar'Adua Reaches Out To Mallam Buhari and Ex-VP Atiku
Related to country: Nigeria

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has reacted to the judgement of the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, saying he welcomed with humility and gratitude to God Almighty from whom all power and authority come, the affirmation by the tribunal that he was duly elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the majority of votes lawfully cast in the presidential election of April 21, 2007.The President is gratified that the Tribunal unanimously confirmed his avowed belief that the acknowledged imperfections notwithstanding, he was the winner of the presidential poll, which was conducted in substantial compliance with all relevant laws. He thanked Nigerians who have remained steadfast in their support for his administration as it strives to fulfill its mandate for positive and significant changes in the living conditions of all citizens. The President urged his two valiant opponents in the election who petitioned against its outcome to accept the verdict in good
faith. His invitation for them to cooperate with him in moving Nigeria forward remains and he calls on them to accept it now in the greater interest of the country. He reaffirms his total commitment to serving Nigeria to the best of his abilities and running a purposeful and result-oriented administration that will yield tangible and visible benefits for Nigerians. The President also reaffirms his commitment to working with all stakeholders to fully address the problems associated with past elections in the country and achieve a positive reformation of Nigeria's electoral system that will ensure that the problems do not re-occur in future. Meanwhile reactions have begun to trail the ruling from all over the country and beyond.

Archbishop defends Sharia remarks
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

The Archbishop of Canterbury has defended his decision to speak on Sharia law, saying it was his duty to speak on behalf of other religions.
Dr Rowan Williams said although he felt some of his remarks had been taken out of context, he took full responsibility for any resulting misunderstanding.

Dr Williams was clarifying comments in which he implied adopting aspects of Sharia in the UK was "unavoidable".

The prime minister earlier praised Dr Williams' "great integrity".

Corporate support for Timex summit on corruption

TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant, MTN Nigeria and Intercontinental Bank Plc, the new face of leadership, lead the league of partners to the first ever global communication summit on corruption in Africa organised by Timex Communications (Nig) Ltd. Scheduled for February 24 - 26, 2008 at Hilton Luxury (Le Meridien) Hotel in Abuja, the event seeks to bring together top global communication specialists to deliberate on how communication can enhance the anti-corruption crusade in Africa.

By their sponsorship, MTN is poised to brand the conference hall with its dominant yellow colour for the event's opening ceremony on Monday, February 25 and will take an exhibition space to showcase its products and services. Intercontinental Bank is bankrolling the Gala Dinner also scheduled for Monday and will brand the dinner hall with its combined yellow and blue corporate colours depicting the bank's New Face of Leadership. It will also exhibit its brands of products and services at the summit. The bank's group chief executive, Erastus Akingbola, is expected to give an after-dinner-talk on "the challenge of being successful & ethical in banking."

Kabir Dangogo, the chief executive officer of Timex Communications, the organisers of the summit in conjunction with the Federation of African Public Relations Association (FAPRA) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) said in a press statement giving an update on the event that the response the summit planning committee received from corporate bodies had been very positive.

"The response has been overwhelming and beyond our imagination as many corporate organisations want to identify with the Federal Government's fight against corruption in the land," Dangogo explained.

According to the statement, already a dozen corporate organisations, including six banks have confirmed their interest in partnering the summit which focuses on Building a corruption-free society: The challenges of communication. The banks include Intercontinental Bank, Spring Bank, Oceanic Bank, First Bank, and Central Bank of Nigeria. Three other banks including a regulatory agency and a multi-national organisation may come on board this week.

The statement explained that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Federal Ministry of Information & Communications have also partnered the summit.

Other corporate sponsors include Education Trust Fund, Securities & Exchange Commission, Vigeo Ltd, Virgin Nigeria, Arik Air, TimexIntermedia Communications Ltd and a couple of other unnamed government agencies.

The Honourable Minister of Information & Communications, Mr. John Ogar Odey will on behalf of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole is also expected to speak on the imperatives of communication in the anti-corruption war in Nigeria just as the Executive Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau speaks on his Government's social reorientation programme, Adaidaita Sahu. Top communications specialists from across the world are expected to facilitate the summit.
