LIVE from New York!

Next week, world leaders from more than 150 countries will gather in New York City to mark the opening of the United Nations' new operational year -- the 62nd General Assembly.

Heads of State will take to the podium to discuss their countries' priorities and the important work of the United Nations for the coming year. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is using this assembly of world leaders to press for action on some of the most serious issues facing the world, including:

Confronting Global Climate Change
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is bringing together the largest meeting of world leaders ever assembled to address climate change next Monday, September 24, with the goal of building political will to create a new international climate agreement beyond the Kyoto Protocol, which will expire in 2012. Heads of state and top officials, including President Bush and California Governor/climate change activist Arnold Schwarzenegger, will be involved in the day-long meeting.

Follow the day's action LIVE on Monday by visiting UNDispatch.com -- a blog on UN issues. UN Dispatch will host some of the top foreign policy and environment bloggers in the country at the UN and they will all be reporting continuously throughout the day.

Supporting Peace for Darfur
Having just returned from a week-long visit to Darfur, Secretary-General Ban is holding a high-level meeting today, September 21, to continue progress on three fronts: ensuring that Darfur peace negotiations continue; expediting the deployment of the UN-AU peacekeeping force; and addressing development as progress is made toward a political solution. Visit BetterWorldCampaign.org to learn more about the UN's efforts to bring peace to Darfur.

Galvanizing International Support for Iraq
Following the Security Council's unanimous vote to expand the role of the United Nations in Iraq, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will bring together Iraqi leaders, neighboring countries, and major world powers in New York to discuss ways the UN can further build international support for and assist with stability in the region, Iraqi national reconciliation, and humanitarian assistance. Visit BetterWorldCampaign.org to learn more about the UN's growing role in Iraq.

As in the past, this year's UN General Assembly will provide a place for countries to come together to forge global solutions to problems that no one country can solve alone.

With Best Wishes,
